Chapter 82 Ding Yuexin tearful complaints

Mu Yunyao took the newly-appointed shopkeeper Ding downstairs, and the apprentices below quickly got up and gave their greetings. Their curious eyes sneaked a glance at Ding Yuelan from time to time. "Everyone be quiet. There’s something I need to announce today. I want to introduce Lady Ding to everyone. From today, she has become the shopkeeper of our Niyunfang. You can call her shopkeeper Ding. If you have any concerns, from now on, you should seek her to solve them. But if you still can't solve the problem, then you may come to find me or my mother. Otherwise, you shall listen to shopkeeper Ding’s instructions as much as possible, understand?"

"Yes, Miss. The slaves and maidservants understood. Greetings to shopkeeper Ding."

Ding Yuelan momentarily pondered then began her speech: "Several of you already know me. Some words must be clearly said today. Now I have separated from Zhou Xuan Fu, and I am no longer a married lady. Moreover, I have cut off my relationship with the Ding family. You will hear many rumors in the future, lies and slander will also be mixed in. I can’t explain everything. However, I can only say this. I have a clear conscience. As for how others talk about me, I can’t do anything about it. I just request everyone to look into one’s heart with no shame (to consider matters with a clear conscience)."

Mu Yunyao was extremely satisfied with her move. Although Ding Yuelan only explained her situation on the surface and avoided causing more trouble after the rumors surfaced, she also expressed her intention to stay in Niyunfang wholeheartedly.

The apprentices on the lower floor looked at each other. They were still young and their minds were relatively simple. When they heard that Ding Yuelan say that she had cut off her relationship with Xuan Fu, they were surprised but did not have any other strange ideas.

"Alright now. Hurry up and eat your meal. We’re going to be busy later." Mu Yunyao concluded the morning meeting.

    "Yes, Miss."

Ding Yuelan's family was originally a merchant family. She also managed some shops, so she knew a lot about what a shopkeeper should do.

Mu Yunyao handed over some account books and other types of books for her to peruse. When she saw Ding Yuelan busying about, she felt more and more that her decision was correct.

The customized clothes ordered by the various ladies were almost done. Thus, Mu Yunyao began to embroider the patterns with great concentration and finished the final work in a rush. Caiyue Pavilion had been closed. She had seen a few embroidery ladies who also signed up to learn the embroidery method she taught. When she finished this matter, she could choose and hire the best embroidery ladies to  help Niyunfang make the clothes. After that, she could completely pull herself away from the embroidery business and focus all her attention on the work for the tea house business.

For the following two days, Ding Yuelan concentrated on the matter of Niyunfang. Mu Yunyao noticed that she was almost completely familiar with Niyunfang’s business. At noon, Mu Yunyao called Ding Yuelan upstairs and said: "Shopkeeper Ding, in these two days you’ve become familiar with Niyunfang. Have you made up your mind to stay here?”

Afterwards, she took out a contract. The content of the contract was extremely simple, and there was not much restraint on Ding Yuelan. In the end, it was merely to give her peace of mind.

"Young miss, the content is very good, but I can't sign it now." Ding Yuelan shook her head.

"Why’s that? If the shopkeeper feels that there are any conditions that are not suitable, we can discuss it again."

"No, it’s not because of the conditions. My affairs are far from over, I’m afraid..." Ding Yuelan retrieved her sight from the contract and sighed in her heart. Although in Dal Dynasty the restrictions on women were not harsh, but the ‘glory’ from her divorce would make one questions her morality and conduct. Not to mention she already reached rock bottom from being chased out from her maiden family.

"Lady Ding is worried about your family?"

"Yes, at the moment, the official document for my divorce hasn’t come yet. Although there’s no action from my maiden family's side now, no one can say for sure they won’t make trouble in the future. If any trouble arises, it will greatly affect Niyunfang. It’s a critical period now so I can't sign the contract. I must not cause trouble for Neiyunfang and affect the embroidery stitching lessons."

Mu Yunyao could not help but laugh: "Seeing the Lady can think of Niyunfang to this extent, you’re the right person to be the shopkeeper. Since you feel that there are no problems in the conditions of the contract, then you can sign it down boldly. So that when something really happens, Niyunfang can also support you openly and impartially."

Ding Yuelan still shook her head. Although Niyunfang had been in the limelight nowadays, it was still only a small embroidery shop of a small family. Compared with the Zhou family and the Ding family, Niyunfang still could not be mentioned in the same breath with them (TN:incomparable). If the two families joined forces to find trouble, Niyunfang could not compete.

As she spoke those words, Jin Lan hurriedly ran upstairs: "Miss, Lady Jingling Tongzhi came, and she’s crying downstairs, saying that she would ask Xuan Fu to invite his wife to go back." Ding Yuelan abruptly stood up and her face became extremely ugly in a flash: "Young miss Mu, thank you for your hospitality in the past few days, then..."

Mu Yunyao picked up the pen and paper and quickly signed her name on the contract, then pulled Ding Yuelan’s hand and dipped it into the inkpad and pressed it directly on the other side of the contract.

"Young miss Mu, you and I only met each other by chance. It’s really not worth it for you to do so much for me." Ding Yuelan panicked. She already could not thank Mu Yunyao enough for taking her in twice. She could not bear to trouble her again.

Mu Yunyao put the contract away calmly: "You’re now the shopkeeper of my Niyunfan. If I can’t even protect my own shopkeeper, won’t Niyunfang be trampled by other people later on?"

Before, Mu Yunyao did not dare to do this, but now there was Lady Jin and others supporting her. Whoever dares to move against Niyunfang would need to get through with most of the officials in Jingling City. A small fifth ranked Xuan Fu dared to directly destroy her Niyunfang, would be a mantis trying to stop a chariot (TN: To overestimate oneself and attempt sth impossible)

Ding Yuelan was stunned and a warm current seeped into her heart and dispelled the darkness. Then, she secretly made up her mind. If the Zhou family and the Ding family were unwilling to relent, then she would have no choice. It’s either the fish dies or the net splits (TN: a life and death struggle) but she would not let the innocent Niyunfang be implicated.

"Lady Ding, there’s a question I have to ask clearly but, are you resolved to completely break off the relationship with the Zhou and Ding families?"

Ding Yuelan felt prickling pain in her heart, closed her eyes, and focused on the key point: "I have decided to no longer have even a tiny bit of relationship with them anymore."

"Then, I understand what to do," Mu Yunyao called Jin Qiao and whispered to her: "You go and help Lady Ding to change her clothes and fix her makeup. In the meantime, I’ll go downstairs to have a look."

    "Yes, miss."

There were already a crowd of people crowding by the entrance. Lately, Neiyunfang had attracted a lot of attention. With Ding Yuexin’s dainty and weak crying figure at the door, it caused many “good things” to be wantonly publicised. After a short while, more people came to gather at the entrance of Niyunfang .

Mu Yunyao came downstairs, with a slight smile on her lips. As usual, when she saw Ding Yuexin, she stepped forward to curtsy: “Greetings to Lady Tongzhi.”

Ding Yuexin was wearing the Yu Hou Zang Hua set of clothes. Her face’s complexion was white and her eyes were reddish and there were some teardrops falling down. It was as if she had suffered a great grievance and attracted many people's sympathy.

"Young miss Mu, is my sister here?"

"Madame is indeed in Niyunfang. But, is Lady Tongzhi only came here to visit her sister?" Mu Yunyao’s eyes were filled with curiosity, and her voice was crisp and melodious, which reached everyone’s ears.

“Two days ago, Lady Ding came to Niyunfang in the middle of the rainy night. At that time, she was soaked and pale. After asking her, she said that she was chased out by the Ding family without even a piece of cloth. I couldn’t bear to watch her, so I hired Lady Ding as the shopkeeper of Niyunfang. I haven’t seen you these few days. I thought that you and Lady Ding are close sisters and you certainly would not ignore her. But was there something holding you back from visiting her?"
